HALLOWEEN : Is it really about witches and wizard according to my Nigerian people
This past Friday was Halloween and here in London there were plenty of Halloween parties and weirdly dressed people on the street. Although I have never been on any Halloween custom but its nice seeing people dressed and having fun and also asking myself what really is this Halloween noise is all about. I know here in the United Kingdom it is a borrowed culture from the Americans even though it is not very much elaborated celebrated like it is done in the United States were people decorates their homes with various weird things.
So I was back from my outing and went on to Instagram and viewing various updates and pictures of people already in the mood for the Halloween night, not so long I received a call from my younger sister in Birmingham informing me about her preparations for a Halloween party and how she has always wanted to experience it since it was her first time. Then and direct I remembered an incident that happened last year in Sheffield at a friends aunty's house. Last year Halloween, my very good friend Philip told me to escort him to his aunties place and in the process go out for a Halloween party with some friends. My friend with his big mouth now told his auntie that we were going for a Halloween party that and I was shocked with the sermon that came after this from his auntie. The woman talked about how Halloween was a thing for witches and wizard, how devilish it was and how it is not right for children of God and so on. What got me amazed about the whole preaching was that this was a woman that has spent almost twenty five years abroad. So after receiving the call from my younger sister, I went straight to Instagram and was surprised seeing the post of popular actress Stella Damascus and the horrific comments that followed it for participating in the "devilish" Halloween. This got me worried on how ridiculous, backward and over religious our people can be. Out of curiosity I decided to do some goggling to really know more actually about this thing called Halloween and how it call started or origin.
"Halloween/Hallow e'en/ All Hallows Eve/ All Saints Eve; is an annual Christian celebration held on the eve of the feast of All Saints Day or All Hallows Day as it used to be referred to. The traditional focus of All Hallows' Eve revolves around the theme of using "humor and ridicule to confront the power of death". The costumes however poke fun at the fact that the devil and other evils were humiliated publicly by Christ during his resurrection. Well its a known fact that the scriptures say, that he publicly humiliated the devil when he triumphed over power and principality and put them all under his feet".
However, there are some controversies about its origin being from some Celtic pagan festival, but I ignored this due to the fact that I was unable to find any link to them aside from it falling on the same time of the year.
This got me really thinking after reading all these information and the reason for the witches and wizard story telling. In addition, if you did not know about this, now you know and please do not hate on what you do not know.
